Jolene Hui has recently released her fabulous lesbian short story The Marilyn Phase at loevyoudivine, so I thought it was about time we found out more about her.
Bryn: What brought you to loveyoudivine?
Jolene: I first heard about loveyoudivine when I wrote a story for the “To Love and Cherish” anthology as part of the Sapphic Planet online community. From there, I took a look at all loveyoudivine has to offer and I was extremely impressed with the variety. Because I love to write lesbian erotica, I felt like it was the perfect place for me!
Bryn: Oh, I think you’re going to fit in very well.
The Marilyn Phase is a contemporary short story – it feels very real to me. Is this your fiction of preference or would you also consider longer stories, or other kinds of settings and content?
Jolene: I am used to writing stories in contemporary settings. I like the “real” feel. Raymond Carver is one of my writing idols and he knew how to write people as they really are and often in mundane settings. I love that. The Marilyn Phase is the longest short story I’ve ever written. I typically write shorter pieces, but would love to write this length of story or even longer. I know I’ll get to the novel length at some point! As for setting and content, one of my goals over the summer was to write a sci-fi piece and I didn’t. I guess I’ll have to give myself an extension on that because it’s something I really want to do. I used to write sci-fi stories when I was very young, probably 10 years old or so!
Bryn: so you’ve been writing for some years then. Are there any other childhood interests that you’ve been able to carry through?
Jolene: Reading and writing are the main interests that carried me throughout my childhood. I couldn’t break free of them. I was also involved in ballet and playing piano as a child but now I run and listen to music. Not exactly the same. Of course, I was always a hefty eater. I was born a foodie.
Bryn: Have you considered writing food fetish at all?
Jolene: My first erotic story ever published was called, “Banana Afternoon.” It has been published three times, so far, firstly in an anthology called “Sex and Candy” edited by Rachel Kramer Bussel. It isn’t a food fetish story, per se, but it does include a sexy cupcake scene. I’d definitely consider writing something food fetishy, though
Bryn: I love the idea of a sexy cupcake scene! Soooo, what else do you do when you aren’t writing?
Jolene: As I said before, I do a lot of running. For the past few years I’ve been doing races, so that keeps me up and moving. I have a half marathon coming up in about a month and a half and am doing the LA marathon in the spring. I’m a pretty slow runner, I just do it for enjoyment and it makes me feel great.
I also read a ton. I discovered a site called swap.com this summer and I traded about 40 books or so. So now I have all these books to read that are stacked up on top of my bookshelves. They make me feel secure.
And, of course, I play with my kitty a lot. He’s a Sphynx and needs lots of love and attention.
Bryn: I’m pretty sure I saw some stuff on your website about modelling and acting as well…
Jolene: I do come from a theatre background. I spent a lot of time in San Diego writing, acting, directing, producing, etc. I had a lot of fun doing it but pretty much decided to focus my energies elsewhere. I am in my last year of graduate school now and don’t have time for much else besides school, writing and running. However, my fiance and I are sponsoring an award at the upcoming Shriekfest Film Festival here in LA. I’m really looking forward to checking out the selection of films this year.
Bryn: Do you have any plans for after school?
Jolene: I don’t like to talk about it because I don’t want to jinx anything. It’s separate from my writing career. I know that one day I’d like to write a non-fiction book about sex and I would like it to be mainstream and definitely a best-seller. Now, if I could just think of a good topic…
Bryn: Oh, I understand that entirely. I don’t talk about works in progress with anyone except my partner, it seems to jinx them. The non-fiction sex book sounds like fun. Where can people find you online?
Jolene: The best way of keeping up with projects I’m working on is my blog at http://jolenehui.blogspot.com/. I do have my other website but it’s not current and my blog is where I keep news up about all of my projects. It’s nothing fancy. I wanted to redesign it this summer but it’s hard to find the time!
Bryn: Thanks for chatting Jolene. I’m very much looking forward to the next story from you!
